Spider mite killer sachets contain the predatory mite Amblyseius andersoni. This predatory mite feeds on two spotted mite/ red spider mite (Tetranychus urticaea) and other mites including Broad mite, Cyclamen mite, Carmine mite, Russet mites and European mite.
Amblyseius andersoni predators can feed on pollen, so can be applied to plants before the spider mite is observed or early after it is first seen. Another major advantage is their activity at temperatures from 6 degrees upwards. This enables predators to be introduced earlier in the year and in lower temperature environments than other spider mite predators.
*For severe infestations of spider mite, sachets should be supplemented with Phytoseiulus persimilis if conditions are appropriate to gain total control.
Andersoni will feed on other pests or pollen meaning it can be introduced earlier or when spider mite is not present, preventing outbreaks before they can take hold. Andersoni is also active at lower temperatures than Phytoseiulus persimilis giving control in environments where temperature cannot be maintained or at colder times in the year.
Amblyseius andersoni are active at temperatures between 6-40 degrees making them quite versatile for use in numerous environments. They can also be used with lower levels of humidity than other predators.
Each sachet contains around 250 predators and acts as a breeding site for these numbers to multiply before coming out onto the plant. The sachets last around 4 weeks and should then be replaced to keep a steady flow of predators on the plant.
We recommend applying the sachets at a rate of 1-2 per plant. Based on an average plant 1m in height, with a low to medium infestation of spider mite. If you have a large infestation of red spider mite (signs of webbing, large groups of spider mite, leaf damage) we recommend using the predator Phytoseiulus persimilis in addition to sachets to quickly control pest populations and reduce damage.
Each sachet comes with a handy hook which can be placed on plant stems or leaves straight away. There is a pre formed hole ready to release the predators which will make their way out in a steady stream over the 4 week cycle. You can also tear open the sachets and sprinkle directly onto the plants but this will reduce the life cycle to around 2-3 weeks.
Unfortunately due to the 4 week life cycle you cannot store the sachets for later use. They are always best fresh and can be applied before spider mite itself is present.
Please Note; Amblyseius andersoni is a living creature and can be affected by any chemical pesticides used within the previous few weeks. As a guide cease using pyrethrum or SB plant invigorator 2 days prior to use and other persistent chemicals or universal bug killers 1-2 weeks before using predators.
