Periplan Cockroach Killer

What are the dangers of Cockroaches?

Cockroaches often carry a variety of diseases and exposure to such a pest can pose a significant health risk.

Cockroaches have the potential to transmit diseases to humans such as; food poisoning, Roundworms, Tapeworms, dysentery, viruses, Fungi, allergies, asthma and eczema.

How do I identify a Cockroach infestation?

If you have identified Cockroaches, which are black or brown in colouring, it is important to act as speedily as possible in treating such an infestation.

If you have not been able to physically identify a cockroach, there are still a variety of indicators that can be used to recognise an infestation. Signs of cockroaches can be apparent in an unpleasant odour that may be lingering in store cupboards, under sinks or behind appliances.

You may also be able to identify the shed skins of cockroaches, or irregular, brown coloured smear marks on surfaces where they have been present. Cockroach droppings may also be identified which are cylindrical and of a black/brown colouring.

What is Periplan and how can it help?

Periplan Cockroach Killer contains 100 tiny, black parasitic wasps, called the Aprostocetus hagenowii, in a 60ml vial. This wasp is a parasite of several cockroach species including the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) and Australian cockroach (Periplaneta australasiae). The female parasitic wasp will kill these cockroaches, and prevent their population growth from continuing, by laying its eggs inside the cockroach eggs.

The wasp is highly selective and will not attack other pest species. It provides the perfect biological control solution for amenity sites, public gardens and botanical gardens where the use of insecticides is restricted, or simply not used. Cockroaches can also build up pest resistance to insecticides but are not able to resist these parasites.

Periplan is effective against cockroaches that produce egg parcels. The female of the parasitic wasp will lay its eggs in one to two of these cockroach egg parcels, and from one egg parcel 60-70 parasitic wasps will emerge. Emergence holes can be observed when these wasps have hatched. About 80% of the parasites produced will be females, which is beneficial as the parasite population will continue to grow with successive egg laying.

What conditions are required for the use of Periplan?

Periplan parasites are active from temperatures of 20-30℃ and require a relative humidity of at least 60%.

When should I use Periplan?

Cockroaches can breed rapidly and are highly resilient. A fast application of Periplan, at the first sign of an infestation, is vital in controlling cockroaches.

How do I apply my Periplan?

The parasites should be released in close proximity to the areas known to be infested with cockroaches. It takes a little time for the parasite population to grow, and repeat applications will be required. Parasitoid activity may not be obvious for 2-3 months after the first introduction.

Where can Periplan be used?

Periplan, although highly selective, is a non-native parasitic wasp to the United Kingdom, and requires a release license for use. Periplan has a release license for use in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It does not yet have one in England, so cannot yet be released in England. Any orders that are placed for use in England will not be supplied. There is also a one-week lead time for orders.

A programme of introductions can be arranged for use on sites in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland by contacting Dragonfli Ltd directly.
