Native Ladybirds

There are 26 species in the UK and in recent times this has been added to by the non-native Ladybird, the Harlequin, which originates from Asia.

Ladybirds are very effective predators of aphids (greenfly and blackfly) and some other horticultural insect pests. The adults and larvae of Ladybirds will consume large amounts of aphids. The preservation of the native species in the UK is very important and can be helped with the creation of wildlife friendly areas and habitats.
